Custom Steel & Iron / Resources

A Precise Installation.
A Better-Finished Opening.

Custom steel and iron doors deserve the same attention during installation as they receive during design and fabrication. Plan the opening, delivery, handling, and final adjustments together for an entrance that looks right and operates smoothly.

This page provides general planning guidance for custom steel and iron doors. Use the written instructions, approved drawings, hardware instructions, and applicable product approvals for your specific unit. Anchoring, clearances, flashing, and structural requirements vary by system and opening.

Before Installation

Prepare the Opening.
Plan the Arrival.

Confirm the Details

Review the approved dimensions, frame configuration, swing direction, handing, glass, and hardware before work begins. Have your installer verify the existing opening or the new-construction opening specifications.

  • Check the unit against the approved drawings.
  • Confirm finished floor and threshold elevations.
  • Review the required installation documents.
  • Resolve discrepancies before removing an existing door.

Coordinate Receiving

Confirm the delivery location, vehicle access, receiving area, and unloading arrangements with our team and your installer. Substantial steel and glass units require suitable handling equipment and enough trained personnel.

  • Provide a clear route from delivery to the opening.
  • Protect floors, walls, and surrounding finishes.
  • Arrange secure storage if installation is not immediate.
  • Keep the unit supported and protected during handling.

Inspect & Unpack

Inspect the packaging and accessible surfaces on arrival. Photograph visible damage and report concerns promptly. Open packaging carefully to protect the finish and glass.

  • Keep blades and exposed staples away from the product.
  • Inventory supplied hardware and installation components.
  • Retain labels and packaging until the contents are checked.
  • Do not install a damaged or incorrect unit before review.

The Right Team

Experience Makes
the Difference.

The weight, glazing, frame geometry, and hardware of a custom steel or iron door make installation a coordinated trade task. Use professionals familiar with the selected system and the surrounding wall construction.

Discuss installation services and project support with Prestige. Confirm who is responsible for opening preparation, waterproofing, receiving, installation, and finish work before scheduling the job.

Installation Overview

Work Through the Opening,
One Stage at a Time.

01

Verify the Opening

Check opening dimensions, diagonal measurements, structural support, and the condition of the surrounding construction. Remove debris and confirm the substrate can receive the specified anchors. Any framing, buck, or structural corrections must suit the approved assembly.

02

Plan Weather Protection

For exterior installations, coordinate the sill, threshold support, flashing, sealants, and wall weather-resistive barrier before setting the frame. Follow the project’s approved water-management details, use compatible materials, and preserve required drainage paths.

03

Position & Support the Frame

Trial-fit the frame to confirm placement, clearances, and finished-floor relationships. Establish the required level, plumb, and square alignment. Use specified shims and supports so the frame remains stable without twisting or bowing. Secure and brace it as required before loading it with door panels.

04

Anchor to the Approved Details

Use the fastener type, diameter, spacing, embedment, edge distances, and attachment locations specified for the selected product and substrate. Tightening must secure the assembly without distorting the frame. Do not substitute anchors or modify mounting provisions without the required approval.

05

Fit the Door Panels & Hardware

Follow the unit-specific sequence for setting panels and engaging hinges. Support the panel weight with appropriate equipment and handling personnel. Install the specified hinge components, handles, locks, and other hardware according to their instructions. Protect the glass and finish throughout the work.

06

Check Alignment & Operation

Check perimeter gaps, panel alignment, threshold clearance, seal contact, latching, and locking through repeated opening and closing. Resolve rubbing, binding, or uneven engagement before concealing attachment points or completing surrounding finishes. Do not force panels or alter strikes, hinges, or structural components to compensate for an unresolved installation issue.

07

Complete & Protect the Installation

Complete perimeter sealing and finishing in the required sequence. Remove construction residue with finish-compatible methods, check operation again, and protect the door from other trades. Review care requirements and the finished installation with the owner before handover.

Configuration Matters

Single Doors.
Double-Door Assemblies.

Single-Door Checks

Confirm the panel sits correctly within the frame and operates without rubbing at the head, jambs, or threshold. Verify the latch and deadbolt engage as intended without lifting, pushing, or pulling the panel out of alignment.

  • Consistent gaps appropriate to the selected system
  • Correct hinge engagement and panel support
  • Suitable threshold clearance and seal contact
  • Smooth handle, latch, and lock operation

Double-Door Checks

Check both panels together, including their relationship at the meeting stile. Confirm the active and inactive panels follow the intended closing sequence and that flush bolts engage their receiving points without force.

  • Aligned panel heights and meeting edges
  • Correct inactive-panel and flush-bolt operation
  • Proper astragal and weatherseal contact, where fitted
  • Coordinated roller catches, latches, and locks

Before Handover

Review the Finished Work.

Complete the final inspection with the installer. Record any outstanding items and retain the approved drawings, product information, and care instructions with your project records.

  • Frame attachment completed to the required details
  • Door panels opening and closing smoothly
  • Handles, locks, and flush bolts operating correctly
  • Weatherstripping seated and making intended contact
  • Threshold and perimeter sealing completed
  • Required drainage paths unobstructed
  • Glass and finish inspected for damage
  • Care and maintenance reviewed with the owner

Installation Questions

The Details Worth Confirming.

Are these instructions the same for every Prestige product?

No. Traditional iron doors, slimline steel systems, pivot doors, windows, and interior partitions can use different frames, hardware, attachment methods, and installation sequences. Request the documents for your exact unit before work begins.

What matters for a Florida-approved or impact-rated door?

The installed assembly must match the applicable product approval and project requirements. Confirm the approved configuration, substrate, anchoring, opening limits, and installation details. A general installation overview does not replace those documents.

What should I do if the door rubs or the lock will not engage?

Stop forcing the door and have the installer check frame alignment, panel gaps, hinge support, threshold clearance, and hardware engagement. Contact Prestige for product-specific guidance before modifying hardware or the door assembly.

Can the frame be cut or modified to fit the opening?

Do not cut, drill, weld, or otherwise modify the door or frame beyond the approved installation provisions without written direction from Prestige and any required project approval. Resolve opening discrepancies before proceeding.

What care is needed immediately after installation?

Remove dust and residue using a soft cloth, mild soap, and the supplied care instructions. Dry the finish thoroughly, keep glass cleaner off the metal, and protect the unit from paint, mortar, chemicals, and damage from other trades. Use approved materials for touch-ups and follow the installed hardware’s lubrication instructions.

How do I request installation information?

Contact Prestige with your order or project reference, door configuration, and any relevant opening photos. Our team can help identify the appropriate installation information and coordinate questions with your installer.
